1956 - Air Force Years

Enlistment (continued)

We took another series of aptitude tests and both of us were told we would be going to Keesler AFB in Biloxi, Mississippi, for radar maintenance training. There were openings in an upcoming class at Keesler so our Basic Training was cut short and in 4-6 weeks we were on a train headed south from San Francisco to Los Angles. From there we were loaded into 3-4 sleeper train cars with a big group of Airmen going to Keesler. These cars were attached to a regular passenger train and off we went across the desert heading east, next stop was El Paso, Texas. We had a long lay over in El Paso, several hours to just roam around town. Several of us took the opportunity to go across the border into Juarez, Mexico. I remember walking down the street in Juarez with a small group of guys and we were propositioned on every street corner by pimps offering us girls to have sex with. We were told to not get off the main streets and to move around in small groups so none of us were tempted in any way. Besides we were just wide-eyed kids from the Midwest in a strange world.
